The University of Connecticut’s (UConn) Master’s (MS) in Data Science - Geospatial Data Analysis concentration is a 30-credit on-campus (Storrs Campus) graduate degree focused on data science methods used within GIS-enhanced solutions. Consisting of 18 credits of UConn data science core courses paired with 9 credits of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) courses, the program culminates with a 3-credit capstone project. The capstone experience provides graduates with an in-depth understanding of how to apply data science knowledge and techniques to GIS and spatial-related fields.

Analysis of geospatial data and earth analytics is quickly becoming one of society's greatest applications of data science-driven solutions. Remote sensing data and its analysis is pivotal to the state of our environment in the present and future. Leaders within fields such as forestry and agriculture, urban and environmental planning, surveying and mapping, transportation, climatology, ecology, insurance, utilities and public health know well that data science technologies and mindsets are important components towards making responsible and well-informed decisions. The collection, aggregation and analysis of environmental data collected through remote environmentally dispersed tools is the key to understanding and solving many of our world’s most impactful issues.

An MS in Data Science that develops and cultivates geospatial specialization.

The Geospatial Analysis Data Science concentration equips data science students with advanced knowledge and expertise in state-of-the-art geospatial science and technology. By combining advanced analytical methods such as machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), students will build critical geospatial analysis skills to derive insights from a suite of data streams spawning from sensors onboard tools such as drones and satellites. Students will graduate with high-level remote sensing knowledge of sensors and data types, expertise in data collection, and the technical skills required to manipulate and analyze these data. Students will learn to customize geospatial software via programming to extend built-in functionality in an effort to automate repetitive tasks.

Students exploring employment opportunities in spatial data analysis fields may look towards job titles, such as, Geospatial Analyst, Environmental Analyst, GIS Analyst, Mapping Scientist, Remote Sensing Scientist, Land Use Planner, Surveyor, Urban Planner or Transportation Planner.

UConn’s Master’s in Data Science is an 11-month cohort based full-time in-person program and is eligible for F-1 and J-1 visa sponsorship. Courses are offered on the University of Connecticut’s Storrs, CT USA Campus. This program is eligible for the STEM OPT extension that affords certain F-1 graduate students an opportunity to apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion optional practical training (OPT). The program does not offer graduate assistantships and scholarships at this time.
